Mexican Coca-Cola vs. American Coke

Is Mexican Coke really better? Absolutely. The pure sugar cane tastes more natural than the highly processed fructose corn syrup common in the American version of the beverage. Unfortunately, you may have to go far out of your way to get your hands on the genuine item.

Is Mexican Coke really better? Absolutely. The pure sugar cane tastes more natural than the highly processed fructose corn syrup common in the American version of the beverage. Unfortunately, you may have to go far out of your way to get your hands on the genuine item unless you have a high quality Mexican restaurant that serves it or a local grocery store or Costco that imports it clandestinely.

Other than gourmet coffee, my favorite beverage in the world is an ice cold glass of Coca-Cola.  Of course, not only is the product great, but my love for business causes me to appreciate the nectar of the gods in far more ways than the average person could appreciate.  When I look at a bottle of Coke, I see the company going public in 1919 at $40 per share before crashing to $19 per share.  I also see that today, with dividends reinvested, a single share of Coca-Cola has grown into more than $10,000,000 in wealth.  Oh yeah, and you’d collect roughly $300,000 in cash dividends on your shares.  So, if great-grandma or grandpa had just splurged for a single certificate, you’d be very well off today.

Despite my extraordinary respect for Roberto Goizueta, which I spelled out in 9 Lessons You Can Learn from Roberto Goizueta on my About.com site, he made one key decision that was horrific.  It was a case of (I believe) lower quality justified by an increased profit per serving.  What was this shocking betrayal, you ask?  In an effort to cut costs, the Coca-Cola network, during Goizueta’s tenure as CEO, substituted cheaper high fructose corn syrup for real sugar cane.  The taste difference is substantial.  (The company, of course, swears up and down its non-existent but we held blind taste tests with our friends and family and about 80% of people preferred the real, sugar-based Coke without knowing why we were having them try two different varieties, both out of a paper cup, with their eyes covered.)

Why Mexican Coke Is Better
The good folks in Mexico refused to go along with this trend and the bottlers maintained the original sugar cane formula.  Thus, today you’ll find that Mexican Coke is far superior to the domestic version to the point that a mini-black market has opened up in restaurants and grocery stores.  In fact, one of my local grocery stores has a secret cache of Mexican Cokes that it manages to get its hands on for those of us who love it, and we pay as much as 500% more than the retail value of the stuff due to scarcity. Julia Child Beef Bourguignon Recipe

Tonight, we will be making the Julia Child beef bourguignon recipe showcased in the film Julia & Julie.

Two of our best friends are visiting from Ohio this weekend and so we decided to try the now-famous Julia Child beef bourguignon recipe from Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  After seeing the movie Julie & Julia last Sunday with my mom, everyone thought it would be fun to give it a go.

We found that the Julia Child beef bourguignon recipe was being given away for free by the publisher of her magnum opus, so I thought I’d share them with you here.  It sounds magnificent and, given that I’ve been away from New York for so long, I’m hoping it really does live up to expectations.  (Although the Midwest is close to my heart, it lacks the culinary indulgences of the east and west coasts.)

This is going to be a welcome distraction from all of the site launches, the books, and the general business of growing a company from a start-up to empire.  My parents are going to stop by later tonight to partake in the gastronomical experiment.  If it’s as good as we think it will be, I’m going to rush out and buy a copy of the book.  Giving this recipe away was a brilliant move by Knopf, the publishing house.

*Please note that the publisher of Mastering the Art of French Cooking included two auxiliary recipes called for in the beef bourguignon recipe.  These are the sauteed mushrooms and brown-braised onions, both of which they have included in the PDF download.  Show your appreciation to them by purchasing a copy of Mrs. Child’s cookbook!

I’ll update this post later and let you all know how it went.  My expectations are high.  In the meantime, as dinner is prepared, I’ve got work to do.

——————

Update: We had the beef bourguignon with boiled, buttered red potatoes and green peas with iced tea and it was awesome.  That woman knew exactly what she was doing.  It really is a great accomplishment.  We are going to figure out how to try several of the recipes in Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  I’ve already got a pretty good idea of what the next installment of dinner at Kennon Hall will be.

We Launched the Just Baby Gifts Site

Just Baby Gifts launched on July 1st, 2009 and will serve as a superstore for baby gifts and baby bedding. As a matter of corporate policy, 5% of operating profits will be donated to the company's charitable foundation.

Our newest company, Cherrywood Capital Group, launched its first ecommerce site on July 1st.  The business will specialize in baby gifts and baby bedding, among other things.  It has a different ownership structure than the existing sites, thus the need for a new legal formation.

The baby site has a lot of work left before it’s really up to our standards.  Only about 1 in 20 of the total product offerings are coded and available, the graphics are still kind of rough, and we need to optimize all of the product pages for search.  Even with that, we are really excited about the long-term prospects.  The problem we have now is time and resource allocation because there are so many opportunities and finite hours in the day.

The most unique thing about the baby gift site is that we have made a decision to donate 5% of operating profits to the Just Baby Gifts foundation, a charitable gift fund we will establish at Fidelity. We wanted to do more than just make money on this new site, we wanted to a vehicle to support causes that we believe will make the world a better place.  I’m really excited to see how it goes.

David Oscarson Releases New Pen Series

David Oscarson Consider the Liles Black Pen

David Oscarson Consider the Liles Black Pen

Sweet!  David Oscarson released the next installment of his pen series called Consider the Lilies.  They were inspired by Luke 12:27 when Christ said, “Consider the lilies, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin; yet I say unto you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”

Here’s the company’s official statement on the pens:

Marking our Tenth Anniversary, the Lily Collection speaks of our gratitude for all that is virtuous, beautiful and pure. In a world full of clouds and error, the Lily Collection reminds us of all that we hold precious, all that we hope for and all that we aspire to be.

The Lily Collection incorporates three levels of Guilloché engraving and six colors of translucent and opaque Hard Enamel on each Collection piece. The entire body of each pen is first cut down to the level of the background, leaving the outer and inner lines of the lilies, pads and leaves in high relief. The backgrounds are then kiln-fired with opaque Hard Enamel in either Black or White. The Lilies are the first Collection pieces to incorporate three colors of Hard Enamel onto one surface without separating each of them with dividing lines in high relief and the three colors of the daylilies graduate and gradate inconsistently, emulating nature’s unique ability to distinguish one lily from another.

I have got to get my hands on both of these.  The rollerball version lists for $4,700 with the fountain pens coming in at $4,900 each before sales tax.

Consider the Lilies White Version David Oscarson Pen

Consider the Lilies White Version David Oscarson Pen

The great, eternal question is, of course, whether or not to ink a collector’s edition fountain pen.  Personally, I buy them to write.  I say ink away, absolutely, positively.  These are not just financial investments for me.  They are tangible and in that regard, they are different from stocks or bonds.  You can see them.  At some point, they become emotional attachments, as well.  I can still pick up the two Montblanc pens I bought as my first writing instruments when my mom took me to Omaha to visit Warren Buffett’s jewelry store, Borsheim’s.

At the time, I was in college and I spent $500 or $600 on the two pens, which consisted of a black and platinum rollerball Montblanc LeGrand and a black and gold fountain pen Montblanc LeGrand.  They still sit in my office at headquarters today.  In fact, I used them to sign the papers when I bought my first house, to sign my book contract, and a lot of other important documents.  I’ve used them to sign the incorporation papers for some of the businesses we launched this year.

These are not mere excesses or trivialities.  They are probably one of the best emotional and financial investments a man (or woman) can make if he knows what he’s doing.

Lindt chocolates were recently rated as the highest quality and most satisfying in the world.

Lindt chocolates were recently rated as the highest quality and most satisfying in the world.

According to scientists, “Heart attack survivors who eat chocolate two or more times per week cut their risk of dying from heart disease about threefold compared to those who never touch the stuff”.  In other news, the world’s “best chocolate” was just named and it is apparently Lindt of Switzerland-based Chocoladefabriken Lindt & Sprüngli AG.

Speaking of Lindt, a few months ago, I read through several years of the chocolatier’s annual reports and was delighted by the company.  A giant portion of the firm’s shares are held by the employees through retirement pension funds and it is a fantastically run company.  One interesting thing is that the corporation’s regular shares trade at 27,000 CHF, or $25,123 per share.  Before the crash, they were roughly 43,000 CHF per share.  There are “participation shares” that trade at 1/10th that amount but have no voting rights.

In my opinion, that’s how stock should be.  You’re far more likely to invest in a business-like manner and research a stock if you have to make a substantial investment to buy part of the equity.  It changes the way the mind works and forces you to think as if you were buying part of a business in your own town.  The civilization would be much improved if the NYSE forced all listing companies to have share prices of $10,000 or more.  As it would reduce commission and fees, there’s a slim chance that will ever happen.  I’ve already decided that in another five or ten years when I consolidate all of my businesses into a holding company and take it public, I’m setting the base price of the shares at no less than $250 or $500 each.  It will attract a specific type of investor.

Chopin Opus 10, Number 1 Done Right by Mei-Ting Sun

This has to be the best interpretation of Chopin’s Opus 10 No. 1 on the planet.  The artist is Mei-Ting Sun.  It is unbelievably fluid and fairly flawless (I swear I hear a missed note on the first descent but it’s nearly 4 in the morning when I’m writing this).  Personally, I think Mr. Sun kicks the crap out of Ashkenazy.  They aren’t even in the same ballpark because Mei-Ting Sun creates music, whereas Ashkenazy hits notes.  The phrasing about 23 seconds into the piece is just stunning.  Throughout the entire performance, the phrasing turns what many reduce to a mere display of technical prowess into actual beauty.  Overall, just extraordinarily well done.
