A Night of Testing Dessert Recipes

We opted for an anti-social Superbowl Sunday, stayed home, worked on some projects that needed to be finished, and after they were done, ended up testing several dessert recipes including one from the old Betty Crocker cookbook and another from America’s Test Kitchen.  They both turned out extraordinarily well.  The peanut butter sandwich cookies are out of this world.  They instantly moved to the the second best cookie recipe we’ve ever had, behind the Ghirardelli chocolate chip cookies we regularly make.

Then, in the midst of doing this, for some reason iTunes dumped the entire season of Downton Abbey on our account, which had been released every Sunday night.  So we did a 4+ hour marathon and watched the entire thing, including the Christmas special, and are now caught up with the United Kingdom viewers.  That means another year until the next season begins, which is just as well.  I’m going to be buried in tax filings and accounting approvals in the next month, anyway.

Sometimes, these are the best days in life.  It’s just your family, hanging out, doing whatever.  Though, enjoying this kind of rich bounty tonight means that I have to go running tomorrow.  I am not looking forward to that.

Golden Delicious Apples Wrapped In Pastry and Covered in Brown Sugar and Cinnamon, Stuffed with Raisins Betty Crocker Apple Dumpling

Golden Delicious apples wrapped in a flaky pastry, filled with raisins, and baked in brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter from the classic Betty Crocker cookbook, which I ordered after my post on General Mills.  It came from the early 1900′s and was originally printed on the Gold Medal flour bags.

Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies with Cold Milk

The peanut butter sandwich cookie recipe is one of the best desserts I’ve ever enjoyed.  They will be made regularly for the rest of our lives.

It’s already 1:30 a.m. here but I am not tired.  I might stay up and read for a few hours.

I believe that our old family recipe for apple dumplings is derived from that Betty Crocker recipe. I’d have to ask my grandmother to be positive, but that’s my recollection.

I haven’t executed it in a while, but now that you’ve reminded me, I might have to go get some of the Breyer’s natural vanilla and bake up a batch.

Oh, and the spouse and I have been enjoying Downtown Abbey as well. I believe that we’re somewhere in the middle of the 2nd season. Unfortunately it appears that the 3rd season isn’t available for Prime streaming yet on Amazon, so I’ll be waiting for that I guess.

Amazon announced that it will stream all of Downtown Abbey beginning on June 18th as the exclusive online provider. Don’t forget to watch the Christmas special between Seasons 2 and Seasons 3. Otherwise, you will miss a huge part of the story!
