Official Position of Montana Republican Party Platform: Let’s Throw the Gays in Jail

As if on cue, several moments after I pressed the “publish” button on my wrap-up of the Values Voter Summit 2010, the main news page on Yahoo carried this special gem of an article:

Montana GOP policy: Make homosexuality illegal

At a time when gays have been gaining victories across the country, the Republican Party in Montana still wants to make homosexuality illegal.

The party adopted an official platform in June that keeps a long-held position in support of making homosexual acts illegal, a policy adopted after the Montana Supreme Court struck down such laws in 1997.

The fact that it’s still the official party policy more than 12 years later, despite a tidal shift in public attitudes since then and the party’s own pledge of support for individual freedoms, has exasperated some GOP members.

I cannot believe I’m going to say this but if it looks like the far right-wing social conservatives are going to win in November, I’m going to have to open my pocketbook and support … the other side … just to stop them even though I’d prefer a deadlocked Congress.

Congratulations, Republicans.  You’ve learned nothing from the past elections.  Why can’t you just focus on balancing the budget, fixing our trade deficit, and helping promote economic growth instead of trying to tell people how to live their lives?  You have to secretly want the Democrats to win!  You do everything in your power to sabotage yourself.
