Meeting at About.com Headquarters with My Editor

About.com Site for Joshua Kennon

This morning, I met my editor at the About.com headquarters near the Chelsea area of New York City, as Aaron and my mom checked out the local neighborhood.  Now that I've written for the network going on 11 years, I wanted to work with her to come up with another broad content plan in the same spirit of the overhaul we ran the site through roughly 18 to 24 months ago when we began streamlining and focusing on "newbie" content that explains total basics such as investing in stocks, investing in … [Read more...]

A Hedge Fund vs. a Mutual Fund

Joshua Kennon Mutual Fund vs. Hedge Fund

In the next 2-5 years, depending upon what happens at the private businesses we own, I am seriously considering launching either a hedge fund or a mutual fund.  Both have significant advantages and disadvantages. A Hedge Fund The Pros: With a hedge fund, I could do almost anything I can do now in private business.  This includes borrowing money to acquire real estate or whole companies.  Say I raised $100 million in assets and we had a good 15% year.  With a "standard" hedge fund … [Read more...]

Fresh Tomatoes from the Garden

I am up working on publishing all of my new About.com content, eating a fresh tomato from my grandma's garden that she gave me a few days ago.  It reminds me of my childhood when all of my family members, who lived in the country in the Midwest for the most part, had their own gardens and if you wanted radishes or cucumbers, tomatoes or potatoes, you went outside and harvested them, brought them in the house, washed them, and had honest-to-goodness food.  No preservatives, no packaging, no … [Read more...]

The Reason the Video Game Industry Is Bigger Than Hollywood

Tales of Vesperia

Tales of Vesperia continues to rock my world.  I played for several hours again today after reading wealth reports and working on the upcoming About.com content I've been writing this week (I tend to publish the good stuff over there in big batches because I like for it all to work together and be cohesive).  The rest of my week is going to be consumed by preparing for a Board of Directors meeting with my sporting good company, which will probably be held in Kansas City or Houston, I haven't … [Read more...]

How I Structure My Day

Setting the Agenda

When I come into the office, I begin by sitting down with a white pad of narrow-ruled paper (very small lines - smaller than college ruled because that is how I like it), and set out everything I want to achieve that day.  If I knock off the top 5 things, I consider it a success. After reading a fantastic book - one of the best I have EVER read called The Millionaire in the Mirror: How to Find Your Passion and Make a Fortune Doing It--Without Quitting Your Day Job, I realized that everything … [Read more...]

A $1,000,000 Municipal Bond Dilemma

Municipal Bonds and Muncipal Bond Investments

Those of you who follow my writings at About.com, a division of The New York Times, know that I've written about municipal bonds at the Investing for Beginners site including one article that detailed some ways to help you determine if a specific municipal bond was "safe". At the wedding this weekend, I was discussing a family friend, who shall remain nameless, who is in his 80's and has more than $1,000,000 parked in municipal bonds.  As many of you know, this means he earns tax-free … [Read more...]

Where Do Millionaires Invest Their Cash to Keep It Safe?

Where do millionaires invest their cash?

I've been having a conversion about investing and money with the reader "Frat Man" in the comments section of another post.  He asked: I also had one other question I have always wondered. Where do millionaires keep their money? In the sense that FDIC insurance only covers $250,000 at the bank and SIPC only covers $500,000 at the brokerage. I mean, I can't see Bill Gates putting $250,000 at thousands of banks across the country, nor can I imagine Lou Simpson's net worth getting wiped down to … [Read more...]

How to Avoid Financial Stress

How to Avoid Financial Stress

I was reading through the comments on an article about investing over at Yahoo Finance and a lot of people were whining about the fact that it is impossible to save money.  Only those who inherit their money can be rich (which you all already know is false based on the evidence). A gentleman named Frank replied to the commentators: It is absolutely, positively true.  Pay cash.  Eliminate all debt.  No mortgage.  Save as much as you can.  For a vast majority of people, that is the … [Read more...]

Tasty Homemade Lemon Cupcakes

Tasty Lemon Cupcake with Lemon Icing

My mom brought by a batch of homemade lemon cupcakes she made, along with some raspberry-filled lemon cupcakes, because she is trying out some new recipes. A few moments ago, as I paused before going back to work on the book and the regular About.com updates, I decided to enjoy one with a glass of milk.  Given that I ate a wonderful, and large, steak earlier today with Aaron's family, it is now abundantly clear that I'm going to have to hit the gym tomorrow.  I'm so not looking forward to … [Read more...]

The Secret Philosophy of Successful Investing – One of My Best About.com Articles

Investing Philosophy

This is a cross-post of The Secret Philosophy of Successful Investing from About.com, a division of The New York Times because I want to highlight the piece in case any of you missed it and get you to head over to the Investing for Beginners site to check it out! Why?  I've received tons of private messages, emails, and other communications thanking me for writing this specific article, causing this to become, hands down, one of the highest rated pieces of content I've published in the past ten … [Read more...]
