Aaron and I have been talking about setting up a recording studio in the office for some time. We have top-of-the-line Power Mac systems with dual 30″ HD monitors, Apple Logic Studio or Pro (whichever was the best one), Soundtrack, huge, fully-weighted 88 key brand name synthesizers, professional quality microphones, and a lot of other stuff we picked up from our time paying our way through university with music scholarships. The thing is, I have absolutely no idea how the logistics work for structuring the hardware.
We both still compose and perform quite a bit; he’s been playing Erik Satie for months and I’m working my way through some Chopin and video game music. For now, it’s done on the mahogany grand piano, which has an electronic system built into it but certainly can’t compare to the full fledged powers of a recording studio software suite. It would be nice to be able to get up at 5:30 in the morning, get dressed, grab a cup of coffee, and go down to the office to play and record for awhile. I miss advanced music theory, being forced to write counterpoint for harpsichord in different styles or studying jazz piano chord structure. I’d like to be able to publish some of the string quartets that I’ve composed over the years. I will not let that fantastic education go to waste. Not to mention, part of me finds such joy in the process. It’s just a different manifestation of building businesses. It’s all about creating something.
I want to make this happen but I have far too many other things in the works right now. This year, 2010, is going to be transformative for our companies. Setting up a recording studio shouldn’t cost much money because we already have the stuff, it’s just time. If I had a simple check list, I could take a Saturday and do it. But I don’t want to spend weeks studying how to be a sound engineer. I want a turnkey solution. I know myself and I know Aaron. If we start this, before long, we’re going to be ordering new Mac systems, hiring an electrician to put in studio lighting, new carpeting and repainting, putting up sound panels. I cannot let this happen right now.
