My Day In Pictures – January 13th, 2011

Evelyn at Brooks Brothers Helping Aaron

Today was an errand day, mostly related to the secret office Aaron and I opened across town as a strategy tool.  We need to get the stuff for it ourselves because we don't want a lot of people knowing where it is so we can work uninterrupted. Also, remember back on December 3rd, 2010 when I ordered half-a-dozen new made-to-measure shirts from Brooks Brothers? It has been almost a month-and-a-half so you might not. But, anyway, the shirts finally arrived and I had to stop by the store to … [Read more...]

We Are Living in the Midst of One of the Biggest Bond Bubbles in History

McDonald's Bond Certificate Corporate Debentures

Today, I was sitting at the dining room table, drinking a cup of coffee and wearing my Brooks Brothers pajamas watching the stock market skyrocket when it occurred to me that, given the secret project and some other things going on at the business, I want to build some cash and bond reserves at one of the individual operating companies; maybe put aside money a little at a time, let it build and do something fun with it three or four years from now, like design and build a row of townhouses or … [Read more...]

Don’t Spend Money to Feel Better About Yourself

Emotional Shopping Leads to Debt

I happened to be reading a forum for venture capitalists and investment bankers and there was a section for people new to the industry who work in major financial centers such as New York. We're talking about first year analysts earning between $60,000 and $90,000 including signing bonuses, and, if they are lucky, a $50,000 to $100,000 bonus depending upon annual profits, living in a majorly expensive city, who probably have significant student loans. Some of the people were advocating that … [Read more...]

Tried Out the Brooks Brothers Pajamas

Tried out the new Brooks Brothers pajamas

I decided to try out the Brooks Brothers pajamas I bought for my birthday earlier this afternoon. I'll be up for another few hours reading so I grabbed a glass of water and passed the iMac right off the kitchen, giving me a chance to grab a snapshot before I started to wind down for the night. The flannel is incredibly soft. I may have to go get several sets but I'm not sure how big of a variety they offer. Anyway, I'd definitely recommend them to anyone! … [Read more...]

The Secret World of Brooks Brothers

Before I "arrived" as they say, I had no idea how different clothes shopping was for men once they became successful.  Honestly, I never thought much about it but the assumption was that in terms of logistics, it would be just like shopping at Wal-Mart only with better surroundings, better service, higher quality and higher price tags.  You know, you walk into a Neiman Marcus or a Saks, look around at the merchandise, and then pay for it at a register if you were satisfied. I was totally, … [Read more...]

Strawberry Jam on Toast with Hot Spiced Tea

Strawberry Jam on Toast with Hot Spiced Tea

It's 2:30 a.m., I am up eating strawberry jam on toast with a cup of hot spiced tea and reading.  Perhaps I stepped out of a British nursery rhyme and am still quite asleep in my bed ... The only thing that would make this better is if it were Christmas, snowing outside, the fireplace were crackling, and I was reviewing the profits from the operating company in my Brooks Brothers bathrobe with red velvet slippers. Maybe I really was a 19th century British financier that got … [Read more...]

Fine Steaks and a Movie with Aaron & Holly … Oh, and a Box of M&M’s

Kansas City Country Club Plaza Movie Theater

Aaron and I went to dinner at Houston's steakhouse with Holly tonight and then saw the new Angelina Joli film Salt at the Palace Theater in the Country Club Plaza.  It was a great time, Holly looked fantastic, and it was nice to get out of the office and just hang out. (Side note: It so drives me nuts that I ended that sentence in a preposition but I know it is colloquially.) The only downside is I had a box of M&M's.  Remember that whole we get … [Read more...]

Locks of Love Donation … And I’m Nervous (Before and After Pictures)

Joshua Kennon with Long Hair

Over the past year, I have grown my hair out to donate it to a charity called Locks of Love that creates custom-tailored hair pieces for children suffering from cancer (and the unfortunate side-effect of baldness, which comes from full-scale chemotherapy and radiation treatment).  They aren't wigs - they will actually fit each child's head and no one can tell the difference - they can even swim without a problem. That is one of the reasons they need hair donations because the costs are high for … [Read more...]

An Evening in the J.C. Penney’s Men’s Department

Stafford Dress Shirts from J.C. Penny's

As promised in Department Store Sales Make Me Really Happy, Aaron and I headed out to J.C. Penney to follow up on the stuff I had mentioned and, sure enough, the sales were spectacular.  It's clearly a different feel from the regular Nordstrom, Charles Tyrwhitt, and Thomas Pink shopping experiences from my New York days, but the amazing thing is I was able to get 1 pair of blue jeans, 2 t-shirts, 3 polo shirts, 5 dress shirts, and 5 ties.  Before the sale, the total would have cost $540.74.  … [Read more...]

Department Store Sales Make Me Really Happy

JC Penny Ties and Dress Shirts

Although I'm normally a Nordstrom's guy myself, I have to say that after reading an article a few years ago (The Wall Street Journal or The Financial Times maybe?) about the vastly improved quality of department stores suits such as the J.C. Penny brand thanks to the use of expert tailors in Hong Kong for a fraction of the price and trying out the difference for myself, I have been genuinely shocked at how good the improvement is.  I waited until a 50% off sale and bought a couple of suits for … [Read more...]
