Mental Model: Social Loafing

If you were starting a project or business, common sense would tell you that you could produce 5x as much output if there were five people working on your goals than if there were just one person.  If you are running a counseling program, ten counselors should be able to do 10x the work as a single counselor, right?  If you are starting a candle company, twenty employees should be able to produce 4x the work as five employees, right?  If you are a mom cleaning out a garage, you should get … [Read more...]

Oh, Rush … Really?

Rush Limbaugh

I was listening to Rush Limbaugh and during part of the show he said there is going to be a massive backlash this November against Democrats over the Perry v. Schwarzenegger ruling because of the "judicial activism" of Judge Walker. Uh ... wait... what?! How are the Republicans going to blame the Democrats for this when it was President Reagan who tried to put Walker on the bench and couldn't get it done because he was so conservative that Nancy Pelosi did almost everything she could to … [Read more...]

It Was an Amazingly Productive Day

We are having an amazingly productive day.  Thus far, we have: Paid a ton of bills for one of the businesses. Submitted the final tax documents to the accounting firm that handles our business and personal filings. Had lunch / dinner at Panera Bread with Aaron. Went to Michael's and got a bunch of our Carl Barks rare lithographs framed for 50% off! Went on a book run to Borders to pick up a bunch of business, psychology, and biography books. Spent a few hours talking politics with … [Read more...]

Dear Ken Cuccinelli. You Are Proof That The Older Generation Just. Doesn’t. Get. It.

A friend of mine sent me information on the recent actions of the Attorney General in Virginia.  I almost couldn't believe it, but true enough, he has issued his legal opinion that state colleges and universities cannot self-govern and determine their own community standards, including creating classes of people they want to protect.  Not only is this bad for civil rights, it is an affront to the independence of the nation's school systems.  Educational institutions must be free to teach … [Read more...]

Dominion Theology and the United States

Christian Dominion Theology

A few weeks ago, I was reading a political message board where some commentators espoused their sincere belief that all of humanity's problems will be solved when they succeed in implementing dominion theology.  Intrigued, I began to research the concept.  What I found was frightening.  The only good news is that all mainline Christian religions have rejected dominion theology, although some, such as Focus on the Family, are accused of practicing a "soft" form if it. In a nutshell, … [Read more...]

The Sin of Sodom and Gomorrah

Apple of Sodom

Discussing the Sin of Sodom at a Family Dinner After we left St. Louis, I stopped by to visit family and spent an afternoon at my grandmother's house having dinner, discussing politics, and Christianity in general.  The conversation was great and had many of the same topics that the younger generation of Christians have been discussing on everything from abortion rights to international trade. One of the things that came up was how often Christians spout scripture that they believe they … [Read more...]

Horseshoe Political Theory

Horshoe Political Theory states that extremist do no fall along the opposite ends of a political spectrum, but rather occupy a space very close to each other like ends of a horseshoe.

Those who talk about "the left" or "right right" when it comes to politics or political theory are often missing a very important point.  The best illustration comes from horseshoe political theory, which states that opposing sides of an issue are more like the ends of a horseshoe.  In other words, their belief in the right to force their will on the populace is just as strong with the only difference being the specific beliefs they are espousing.  Instead of being complete opposites on a … [Read more...]
