How I Structure My Day

Setting the Agenda

When I come into the office, I begin by sitting down with a white pad of narrow-ruled paper (very small lines - smaller than college ruled because that is how I like it), and set out everything I want to achieve that day.  If I knock off the top 5 things, I consider it a success. After reading a fantastic book - one of the best I have EVER read called The Millionaire in the Mirror: How to Find Your Passion and Make a Fortune Doing It--Without Quitting Your Day Job, I realized that everything … [Read more...]

Here Is One of My Secrets to Making Money (Or, How I Once Bribed Women to Code for Me with Diamonds, Rubies, and Chanel)

Diamond and Ruby Bracelet with Bottle of Coco Chanel Mademoiselle Perfume

The Secret: Strike Deals Where Everyone Has Limited Downside and Harness the Super Power of Incentive Some of you have been writing to me privately and asking about the early days when we started out and were trying to build our companies.  I thought it would be useful to share some of the things we did during that time that worked out well ... and maybe I'll even talk about those things that didn't work out so favorably.  I hope you find it useful in your own endeavors. When Aaron and I … [Read more...]

Ruby Is Now a Steel Baroness on the Tycoons Facebook Game

Super Tycoons Facebook Game

My grandma Ruby is finally on Facebook.  As a result, we got her playing the Tycoons game that I have been obsessed with for the past few months (as evidenced by the total blog posts I've written about it).  Since my last update, I've increased my net worth in the game from almost nothing when I started two months ago to roughly $6 billion today. With the commodity price inflation that has happened, we got Ruby setup and she started with a few hundred thousand dollars, like all players.  … [Read more...]

My (Almost) Three Year Old Niece Has the Saving Money Gene

My Niece and Elmo

My niece, who turns three this fall, has somehow come to associate me with money (or as she calls them, "monies"). When she goes to visit my grandma Ruby, which is her great grandmother, she gets to save up an allowance in a bank bag for when they go shopping or out on the town. Anyway, she is now up to roughly $6 and change in her little coin purse, causing it to be quite full.  Realizing this, she runs up to "granny" as she calls Ruby and insists, "We have to take the monies to Joshie.  … [Read more...]

A Night at the Casino

Ruby at the Casino

Ruby wanted to visit a much larger casino, so Aaron and I took her to the Ameristar casino in Kansas City and she treated us to dinner and a bit of gambling money (with firm instructions that I *had* to spend it in the casino - I was not allowed to pocket it and invest it, as is my habit with everything that flows into my life - which made me laugh because my family knows me well). Here are some pictures of where we went with the rest of this post written in the captions of each image. … [Read more...]

Four New 64 Gigabyte iPads for the Business!

IPad for Business Review

After dropping Jocelyn off at the airport yesterday morning, Aaron and I went to Barnes & Noble to get a range of additional business books. We then returned home, Aaron decided to go to his parents' house and paint Easter eggs with his nephew and mom. A series of events then lead to my parents and I driving to the Apple store in the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, buying four (4) new 64 Gigabyte iPads with matching leather cases, as well as a new 32 gigabyte iPhone for my mom. The … [Read more...]

Stereotypical Casino Food

casino-food-casino-buffet-chicken-fried-steak

This afternoon, Ruby stopped by and asked me to go to the casino with her.  I always enjoy spending time with family and was happy to do so, despite my general distaste for casinos (as an investor, I know the probability tables and payout ratios for most of the games; I love owning casino stocks but find myself unable to play the games without feeling like I'm doing something foolish). As she went into play, I grabbed dinner because I hadn't eaten.  I sat down with a book I picked up at … [Read more...]
