New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley Teaches About Inflation Using the iPad … And Makes People Angry

ipad-inflation-thumbnail

There was a firestorm of controvery this morning following remarks by New York Federal Reserve Chairman William Dudley. In an attempt to explain how the Federal Reserve calculates inflation, the Fed President commented to a group of working class people that you can't just look at the price of food - the price of everything has to be factored in to understand what is happening to the purchasing power of the dollar.  His comments: "Today you can buy an iPad 2 that costs the same as an iPad 1 … [Read more...]

How to Solve the Trade Deficit – Part III

Knowledge Worker

This is Part III of my special on How to Solve the Trade Deficit.  If you missed the earlier parts, you can read Part I or Part II first. How to Solve the Trade Deficit - Knowledge Workers vs. Manual Workers In many ways, your question about the trade deficit has very little to do with global trade policies and everything to do with the rise of the "knowledge worker" class that Peter Drucker predicted in 1959. Drucker, the management guru who is to executives what Warren Buffett is to … [Read more...]

Why the iPhone Will Continue to Dominate the Smart Phone Market Even if It Doesn’t Have the Biggest Screen or Fastest Processor

iPhone Versus Other Smart Phones

It All Comes Down to the Existing Investment Consumers Have Made in their iTunes Library of Music, Movies, Games, Apps, and Television Shows It seems that a handful of tech folks and business bloggers - and, in fact, even my own brother - don't seem to understand that the reason people choose the iPhone over other smart phones, even if those other smart phones have bigger screens, more memory, and non-restricted applications, is because tens of millions of consumers now have a vested … [Read more...]

Building a Flour Empire on Super Tycoons

I have been playing Super Tycoons so much on Facebook and my iPad that I upped my donation to the developers from $150 to $250. I decided that my next focus is on launching a series of grain mills to build a fortune in the flour industry. Once I've paid for the upgrades, which will cost at least several hundred million dollars in the game, I will have a total of 15 operational mills producing 151,200 pounds of flour per day. At $115 per pound, this would add $17.39 million to my in-game … [Read more...]

Sugar Prices Hit 30 Year Highs

Imperial Sugar

I spent the evening reading through the annual report and SEC filings of Imperial Sugar on the iPad listening to the river outside with the windows open. (That would be an article in and of itself - the company had a huge explosion in 2008 at one of its sugar refineries, killing several employees and injuring dozens more.  The insurance proceeds have been paid and they rebuilt a state-of-the-art facility that is just now gearing up for full production.  Yet, they are off hedge accounting, … [Read more...]

French Style Gardens … A Gift to My People

French Style Gardens in Ngmoco We Rule Kingdom for iPad

I decided to spend through a lot of the accumulated gold in my treasury from Ngmoco's We Rule game on the iPad.  Following an extensive kingdom redesign, the citizens of my realm can now enjoy French styled gardens.  I said it before and I'll say it again ... my munificence knows no bounds ;) If you have the game on your iPhone or iPad, add Aaron and me.  His gamer tag is Gold Mage and mine is treasuryshares. … [Read more...]

We Rule by Ngmoco for iPad and iPhone Has a Really Cool Business Model

We Rule by Ngmoco for iPad and iPhone

I've been playing We Rule, the new video game by Ngmoco.  It is a freemium model, meaning you play the game for free by downloading it from the iTunes store.  But to level up faster, you can spend real money on something called Mojo.  It is the 21st century equivalent of an arcade game business model with the exception that you don't have to spend money to enjoy the experience if you are patient.  In fact, you could become the greatest ruler of all time without spending a … [Read more...]

The View From My Window …

The View from My Window

This is the view from my bedroom window when I wake up in the morning ... I normally have a cup of black coffee and read.  I normally stay there for a few hours before getting up and starting my day.  That way, I have the reading (sometimes books, sometimes stock reports, or sometimes a finance article I am going to publish) out of the way so I can spend the rest of my time doing whatever sounds enjoyable ... sometimes, that includes writing for 18 more hours or building spreadsheets of … [Read more...]

I’m Working on a New Book

Finance Book

I turn down several book contracts a year and have for probably the past 5 or 6 years.  Despite having one of the largest investing audiences online, other than my Penguin book contract in 2006, I avoid the commitments because I don't like being tied to deadlines (even though I tend to work faster than most other people - it's just something about having control over my own time). However, I have been working on some ideas for a series of books that cover everything from finance (how to … [Read more...]

The Success of the iPad Will Come Down to App Development

The iBook Store in iPad

Five days or so into my experience with the iPad and it continues to exceed expectations (by far). I've spent somewhere between $120 and $150 in the Apple iTunes App store, which compared to my previous purchases of apps (read: $0), means there is more cash flowing into Steve Jobs' coffers. The overwhelming indication continues to be that the success of the iPad will come down to the applications that software companies develop for it. We bought our iPads for business purposes. As an … [Read more...]
