Mail Bag: How Would You Measure Financial Success?
What defines financial success? Each of you probably has your own answer, but here’s how I think about it.

Long story short, I’ve been looking into Taipei for various reasons and, in the process, discovered that McDonald’s serves limited edition White and Black burgers there. Besides the fact it warms this American’s heart to know that I’m collecting New Taipei dollars (McDonald’s dividend day was last week and, with the exception of my two sisters, I have practically every member of my family holding shares somewhere, so the deposit is fresh on my mind as I saw it come in across the accounts), I would very much like to try these out of sheer curiosity.
We made omurice this afternoon because it’s Saturday and that means the family comes over to watch Korean dramas. They are in the final episodes of Rooftop Prince, one of my favorite shows of all time, and those of you who see it know the main characters are obsessed with this particular meal. [mainbodyad]Omurice is…
Whenever I’m traveling, one of the things I miss most is the Missouri sky. Even during the trip to California a few weeks ago, where we saw everything from beautiful wine country to world class beaches, the sky wasn’t of the same caliber. Though the same weather patterns can sometimes spawn monster thunderstorms, they give birth to breathtaking works of art. It’s that sky that helps make the ground so verdant.
For several weeks, I’ve found myself ruminating on a passage from a book I recently read during my research on the good, bad, and benign of multi-tier marketing systems. This was part of my counter-evidence file; people who strongly opposed the model as currently practiced. It was written by Steve Butterfield several decades ago and is…
My mom has been enjoying the adventures of Rooftop Prince, so for her 52nd birthday, she wanted to come over, watch a few episodes, try a new Korean recipe, and hang out with us. My dad was in a golf tournament in the morning but she and my youngest sister pulled into the driveway at 11:23…
I’m studying the so-called peasant dishes, again; those culinary traditions that pack a lot of flavor and yet cost next to nothing to make, such as leek and potato soup, freshly made pasta with butter and sage sauce, the always popular soubise (it may not look like much but it’s mouthwatering), and Saag Paneer. My quest for today,…
I mentioned yesterday in the post about Japanese Gyoza that we had seen Maleficent twice this week in theaters. With time to reflect on the film, I keep coming back to the economic power of certain types of enterprises. It reminds me of a story from a speech Warren Buffett gave two decades ago to…
Nudiustertian, when done with our responsibilities, Aaron and I went to see Disney’s Maleficent in theaters. Yesterday, in the late afternoon, one of my sisters came by the house and mentioned wanting to see it, so we offered to go back and watch it a second time. Later that night, she hung out for awhile, watching…
Whether identifying changes in public policy that could do exponential good or revealing internal assumptions about the way the world works, mental models are the best construct I’ve ever come across to categorize, analyze, study, document, and reflect upon the universe. Yesterday, The Washington Post published an example of cognitive bias when it detailed how how subconscious beliefs can…
