Waco, Texas has some of the best cupcakes in the world. Who would have thought it? As I mentioned earlier, in the past couple of days, I’ve been in Oklahoma City, Fort Worth, Waco, and I am about to head to Dallas. Before leaving Waco, we stopped by a cupcake bakery that came highly recommended. It was called What About Cupcakes.
If you’ve followed this site for long, you know that my mother is obsessed with finding the perfect cupcake, to the point that she has had them flown into her office from thousands of miles away to sample fresh. My sister didn’t have a traditional wedding cake, she had 17 flavors of cupcakes made by a fantastic local bakery (prior to today, the second best cupcake bakery in the United States, in our travels; now dropped to third place). The New York trip last year on which she accompanied me included half-a-dozen of the most famous cupcake bakeries in the world, including watching a live filming segment of Buddy’s Cake Boss show.
[mainbodyad]It is now just a matter-of-course that if any of us are traveling, we have to check out the local cupcake bakeries, and if they are fantastic, order samples. One of these years, I keep half expecting to get a phone call informing us she has signed a lease in Kansas City and written to check to launch her own cupcake empire.
Prior to this trip, the reigning champion was a place called House of Cupcakes in Princeton, New Jersey. We’re also partial to our own cupcakes, including the chocolate peanut butter cupcakes and lemon zest cupcakes we make from time to time (the recipes for both are included in those links) but don’t include those in the rankings because they aren’t available to the public. But What About Cupcakes in Waco, Texas? The best icing ever. The flavors were great, the cupcakes were fresh, and the service was wonderful. It was a small business that you could tell someone started with nothing but a recipe and a spot in the local community. If I am ever back in the area, they are worth going out of the way to experience. For me, they are the new #1, or at least tied for #1.
If you have a chance, check them out as soon as you can!
