Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina by Il. Padre G. B. Martini

Padre Martini

One of my all time favorite pieces of music is Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina (translation: Lord, My God, Assist Me Now), by Il. Padre G. B. Martini, who lived from 1706-1784. Personally, I like it with string quartet, not piano and a bigger choir and the tenor line almost staccato not legato (the "smoother" versions are like saccharine - they make me hostile because they defeat the entire point).  I wish I could find a fantastic, flawless performance for you - especially one that was … [Read more...]

Rediscovering Randy Newman’s Music

A few weeks ago, I bought Natalie Merchant's cover of Randy Newman's song Political Science and that got me to in the mood to listen to some of his music. He has such a unique ability to tell a story with the piano. It really is amazing. His composition ability is just remarkable. He believes that a song writer should have the same "latitude that a short story writer does." … [Read more...]

This Is Why I Love Jay Chou

Jay Chou is one of my favorite musical artists (even though iTunes doesn't have much of his music on it the last time I checked). Anyway, at roughly 2:20 into the video ... most of America's pop royalty lack the musical education and technique to do this. The clip is from the film The Promise.  The two characters are having a piano duel with one playing something and the other having to repeat it or best it. Here is some of his more popular pop-music / adult contemporary: … [Read more...]

New Goldfrapp Album Released

Yes!  Goldfrapp's new album was released and they are one of the few bands that I will buy on total and complete faith.  "Clowns", for example, is approaching 3,000 plays on my PowerMac system alone (and almost as many on the MacBook and other systems). Dear Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, I love and adore you both.  Thank you for adding even more beauty to the world!  The orchestration is absolutely magnificent (I'm sure most people don't notice or appreciate it but touches like the … [Read more...]

Dan Dare (Pilot Of The Future) – Rare Elton John Song

I can't stop listening to this ... I think it is the syncopation in the piano rhythm that I appreciate.  Something about it reminds me of the Tumbleweed Connection album a la "Son of Your Father". … [Read more...]

The Bosendorfer Strauss Grand Piano – A Real Life Lesson in the Time Value of Money

Bosendorfer Strauss Grand Piano

The Opportunity Cost of a Bosendorfer Strauss Grand Piano I'm going to teach you a financial technique that can help empower you to make informed choices about your own life and keep more cash in your pocket.  I've been using it since college and it's done wonders from my bank balance and investments. From the time I was a kid and had only a few thousand dollars in the bank, I have wanted either a Steinway & Sons Model B grand piano and / or a Bosendorfer Strauss model grand piano, … [Read more...]

We Might Setup a Recording Studio In the Office

Apple Logic Studio

Aaron and I have been talking about setting up a recording studio in the office for some time. We have top-of-the-line Power Mac systems with dual 30" HD monitors, Apple Logic Studio or Pro (whichever was the best one), Soundtrack, huge, fully-weighted 88 key brand name synthesizers, professional quality microphones, and a lot of other stuff we picked up from our time paying our way through university with music scholarships. The thing is, I have absolutely no idea how the logistics work for … [Read more...]

My Mom at the Billy Joel and Elton John Concert

My mom at the Elton John and Billy Joel Concert

My mom wasn't allowed to go see Elton John as a kid.  She came from a very fundamentalist household and seeing a "homosexual" wasn't something God's people did, or so they were told.  So, she would wait up at night and watch him on television instead of going to bed.  Once she was old enough, she had all of his albums and when he walks out on stage (she's seem him twice - once in 2005 and then again last night), she is able to get some serious volume to her screams of joy.  To this day, she … [Read more...]

The Billy Joel and Elton John Concert in Kansas City at the Sprint Center Tonight Was Great

Elton John and Billy Joel Concert in Kansas City at the Sprint Center

There's a Good Chance That Were It Not for these Two Men, You Wouldn't Be Reading This Blog Right Now My mom, arguably as big of an Elton John fan as I am, took Aaron and me to the Billy Joel and Elton John Concert in Kansas City at the Sprint Center.  (Thanks again mom!) My life was incalculably changed because of both Billy Joel and Elton John, as most of you who know me realize, and seeing them live together at the Sprint Center in Kansas City tonight was awesome. I had never seen … [Read more...]
