Three Great Acoustic Performances

Adele Acoustic

As I've been working tonight, I've been listening to three performers on YouTube - Stefani Germanotta, Justin Timberlake, and Adele - perform live acoustic versions of some of their songs. It makes me wonder why the music industry is in such disarray. The business would be far healthier if people like this were left alone to compose, perform, and release music from their own homes or studios. It just isn't necessary to have huge productions when you're talented; the smoke and mirrors are only … [Read more...]

We Spent the Morning Playing an Imperial Bosendorfer Grand Piano

Aaron Playing Imperial Bosendorfer Grand Piano

We visited an upscale piano retailer this morning and a wonderful salesman allowed us into the back room to play the 9'+ Bosendorfer Imperial, Blunther, and Steingraber grand pianos.  Out of all of them, both Aaron and my favorite was the Model 225 Bosendorfer, which is around 7.5 feet.  I think I'd want it in the Strauss ebony finish with the interior rim done in Bird's Eye Maple or something comparable. … [Read more...]

Lady Gaga Fugue

Lady Gaga Fugue Icon

Giovanni Dettori has put Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" into a Fugue using counterpoint.  It's very well done.  Bach would be proud. He even makes the score available for download at http://www.giovannidettori.com/LadyGagaFugue.pdf. It makes me want to listen to what is arguably the most famous fugue of all time ... … [Read more...]

Crescendolls by Daft Punk

Crescendolls by Daft Punk

I've been listening to Crescendolls by Daft Punk at the office and the music video reminds me of half of the cartoons that were on the air when I was a kid in the 1980's.  The animation style, the way they show motion, everything.  Today, you don't really see it except in some forms of Japanese cartoons ... especially at the 45 second mark when you see the car license plate and at 54 seconds when the guy steps out of the car.   It immediately takes me back to a time when I would watch … [Read more...]

Diana Damrau is the Best Queen of the Night in History

diana-damrau-queen-of-the-night

I'm going to just say it, Diana Damrau, both in terms of voice and acting portrayal, is the single best Queen of the Night in history.  I don't care what anyone else says.  Her "Der Hölle Rache" is flawless.  I mean, absolutely, cannot-be-improved-upon-in-your-face perfect. It starts at 2:09 into the video if you want to cut to the music. But ... man, this woman has got it. For those of you who don't know the character, the Queen of the Night was thought by some to represent the Roman … [Read more...]

I Should Have Been in Tulsa Right Now to See Elton John in Concert

Elton John and Leon Russell in Concert

Right now, I am supposed to be in Tulsa, Oklahoma to see Elton John and Leon Russell play in concert after the release of the their duet album, The Union, last week. You already know how huge of an influence Elton had on my life, and how the only person who is probably a larger fan than I am is my mom, who forced Aaron to pick up his chicken dinner from the restaurant the last time we saw Elton in Kansas City so we could be in our seats early.  I can still picture him shoving chicken strips … [Read more...]

Songwriter Franke Previte Still Collects Six-Figure Royalty Checks on Two Hit Songs Written Nearly 25 Years Ago

Franke Previt Composer

Reuters just published an awesome article about songwriter Franke Previte, who lives in New Jersey, and wrote the hit songs "Time of My Life" and "Hungry Eyes" for the movie Dirty Dancing. The copyrights have turned out to be a lottery ticket for the composer, providing him with a substantial stream of profits upon which to live.  They are exactly the sort of asset that I tell you to collect: They generate cash, have very little financial cost to the owner / creator, and make money even as he … [Read more...]

Elton John’s New Album “The Union” Is His Best in 30 Years

Leon Russell

I had no idea who Leon Russell was. All I knew was, I love Elton John.  In fact, my iTunes library has 250 or so of his songs, including favorites like "Come Down in Time", "It's Getting Dark in Here", "The King Must Die", "Bitter Fingers", "Old 67", "Razor Face", "Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future)", "Tiny Dancer", "My Elusive Drug", and "I Can't Steer My Heart Clear of You". The office has joked that there is a direct pipeline between my checkbook and Elton John's bank account because every … [Read more...]

Hey Ahab by Elton John & Leon Russell

Elton John Hey Ahab

This is blasting through the office on Bose speakers. I've been listening to it for hours. It's funny - who'd have thought a Moby Dick reference could turn into a great rock song? … [Read more...]

Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina by Il. Padre G. B. Martini

Padre Martini

One of my all time favorite pieces of music is Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina (translation: Lord, My God, Assist Me Now), by Il. Padre G. B. Martini, who lived from 1706-1784. Personally, I like it with string quartet, not piano and a bigger choir and the tenor line almost staccato not legato (the "smoother" versions are like saccharine - they make me hostile because they defeat the entire point).  I wish I could find a fantastic, flawless performance for you - especially one that was … [Read more...]
